Neko Case loves animals. She loves them so much, she’s actually become one. Sort of. Her new single, ‘People Got A Lotta Nerve’, re-casts the Fox Confessor‘s creative vixen as a limb-shearing beast in possession of a killer chorus. “I’m a man-man-man-man-man-maneater,” she snarls in that familiarly twangy voice, “but still you’re surprised-prised-prised when I eat ya”. Sounds silly? It is, in fact, entirely awesome. The bridge, too, just slays with its sky-high notes effortlessly sung. The best bit though is when she comes out of the first chorus with the casual assertion, “You know, they call them killer whales” – it’s just the way she sings it. It shouldn’t work but it does, and doubtless has other layers of meaning. Neko Case is tricksy like that.
Everyone loves a guilt-free download, but we feel extra good for bringing you this song today as Neko and her label, Anti-, are promising to donate $5 to the Best Friends Animal Society for every blog that reposts the song. The US charity celebrates its 25th anniversary this year and is one of the country’s leading animal rescue organisations and operates the nation’s largest animal sanctuary, home to roughly 2,000 animals. Visit www.bestfriends.org for more information. Neko’s eagerly anticipated new album, Middle Cyclone, is released on March 2nd.
