Thao's new one (Daytrotter-centric)

One of last year’s biggest word of mouth success stories, Thao Nguyen recently returned to the Daytrotter studio with her band The Get Down Stay Down to record a second session, including a brand new song called…wait for it…’The New One’. “It is actually the new one. I can’t seem to settle upon any other kind of appropriate title,” says Thao. “It will be on our next record. This one is such a toss up to play live. I think I’ve done it right once. And it was not when it counted. The lyrics are all about communicating want. Does anyone know how? Will you get in touch if you do?”

The session’s other three songs are ‘Beat (Health, Life & Fire)’ (“my favourite off We Brave Bee Stings & All. It is most indicative of where I want our band to go”), ‘Violet’ (“It’s about me mostly”) and ‘Travel’ (“A sincere apology song. It’s short huh?”). Download them all for free here. Thao was actually one of the first artists ever to appear on Daytrotter, during her solo days. Here’s a session from August 2006 featuring early versions of ‘Big Kid Table’, ‘Geography’ and ‘Fear & Convenience’.

While you’re there, check out other new sessions from the likes of Californian singer-songwriter Brandi Shearer and Brooklyn band Stars Like Fleas. Also, Stars Like Fleas just featured on Cokemachineglow’s annual Fantasy Covers podcast with an exclusive cover of Pussycat Dolls’ ‘When I Grow Up’. More details and download here.
