London-based artist Catherine AD (that’s Dredd-speak for Anne Davies) is sitting pretty on top of a whole heap of praise right now. A talented multi-instrumentalist, Catherine also has at her disposal a voice that somehow embodies both a warm sensuality and an intensity that will bring you out in goosebumps. Often saddled with various (largely inaccurate) comparisons ranging from Joanna Newsom to Tori Amos (red hair, piano, it’s obvious really), Catherine has taken her time to flesh out her individual sound, and if the very long list of estimable influences on her Myspace page doesn’t show she knows her stuff, nothing will. Today’s free song is an excellent place to start if you haven’t yet become acquainted. ‘The Book Of Love’, a Magnetic Fields cover, glides with Catherine’s smooth, shivering tones over a simple piano accompaniment. The melodramatic pop composition is sweet in itself, but there is a layer of something darker than mere pop; a gentle, gothic lull that adds a depth and mystery to the stripped-back structure of the tune. Catherine is currently working on her debut album with Suede’s Bernard Butler and Liam Howe of Sneaker Pimps. ‘The Book Of Love’ appears on her latest EP, Carry Your Heart, out on February 16th.
