MP3 | Mika Miko — ‘I Got A Lot’

Brazil’s best-selling female artist isn’t Rita Lee of Os Mutantes, or even Carmen Miranda, but children’s entertainer Xuxa, whose albums have reportedly sold over 35 million copies worldwide. Mika Miko may or may not have named their new album We Be XUXA in her honour – I’m thinking probably not – but whose brain doesn’t need another bit of useless trivia? The band have yet to reveal what or who the titular XUXA refers to, but who really cares when a band is this much fun?

Preview track ‘I Got A Lot’ is a hugely enjoyable, sub two-minute, riff-rife injection of pure rock goodness: simple, shambolic and shrill. Whereas 2006′s CYSLABF occasionally lasped into a sludge of noise for noise’s sake, We Be XUXA looks to be a cleaner (but in no way polished) distillation of their influences. It’s out on May 4th through Post Present Medium. As an aside, thanks to this track I finally looked up what So-Cal really means and am probably the last person in the world to know (Southern California, apparently). I always thought it had something to do with artificial sweeteners. Oh dear. I got a lot to learn.
