Snack on Hors D’oeuvres from OctoberWith last year’s self-titled debut, Animal Collective associate Tickley Feather (real name Annie Sachs) proved herself to be one strange cookie. Our reviewer described it as “very much akin to falling through a wormhole, Malkovich style, into the mind of a confused psychopathic four year old” [full review], so it’s with due care that we turn our ears now to the follow-up, Hors D’oeuvres. She’s still using her trusty 4-track recorder, but that’s where the similarities end. The music here is less like something that might feature in a modern art gallery; still experimental, just somewhat more accessible. Less moody too.
For Hors D’oeuvres, Annie relocated from Philadelphia back to her home state of Virginia where she and her young son Aiden, who provided much of the preciousness of Tickley Feather, set up home and ‘studio’ in a run-down farmhouse in the Shenandoah woods. (Presumably that’s him on the album cover below.) As the bio goes, it’s here that Annie developed these more direct, more joyful works that exude her “Southern Gothic meets Existential Hillbilly vibe”. Hors D’oeuvres is released through Paw Tracks on October 19th.
