Rose Elinor Dougall
‘Fallen Over’

No stranger to these pages, Rose has surprised us yet again with this very classic sounding new single, due out November 23rd. Here we find the former Pipettes member continuing to branch out into carefully orchestrated synth-pop songs that pulse with alternatingly lovelorn/lovestruck moods, always with some element of nostalgia but nothing you could call especially derivative. ‘Fallen Over’ is all about how sometimes we stumble into the best relationships that, while they may not always be plain sailing, are wonderfully enriching. “We know the street’s full of hidden dangers / but I’d face them all, I’d face them all, I would / just to take a walk with you,” she sings, both straight and allegorically. Like such relationships, the descending bassline, stabs and swirls of electric guitar, pacy drums and Rose’s churchy synths and backing vocals all come together to make perfect sense, though by Rose’s own admission that was rather less by accident, achieved as it was through hard work and plenty of revisions. With her debut album Without Why now apparently wrapped up, we’ll be looking forward to hearing much more like this sooner rather than later.
