Is there a collective noun for the current wave of British glam-pop divas that includes Victoria Hesketh (Little Boots), Elly Jackson (La Roux) and Florence Welch (with or without her Machine)? Perhaps a ‘Sequin’ or a ‘Kate Bush-el’? Well, whatever it may be, such an appellation could be applied to Marina & The Diamonds. If you’re somehow not yet familiar, clothes horse and avid blogger Marina Diamandis – Welsh-born, of Greek descent, and now London-based – claims that ‘The Diamonds’ are not a band but how she sees her audience. Her releases so far, the artful piano pop of ‘Obsessions’ and the New Wave anarchy of ‘Mowgli’s Road’, promise much from her forthcoming debut album. This Phenomenal Handclap Band remix of ‘Mowgli’s Road’ strips down the vocal and toughens up the beat, making for a dark NYC disco-punk booty shaker. By dumping the cuckoo motif of the original single and concentrating on the grooves, this remix becomes a more serious dancefloor proposition. The addition of a ‘Billie Jean’-esque bassline and a tight 4/4 groove, organ swirls and a bongo break keep enough of the original wild-child factor alive.
