MP3 | Nite Jewel — ‘Another Horizon’

Under the floorboards of Los Angeles, a gang of thinkers, makers and drinkers are creating toasted marshmallow music with eight-track cassette recorders and a dusty stack of disco inspiration. Nite Jewel, the performing and recording alias of philosophy student Ramona Gonzalez, has gently swayed her way out of the shadow of her famously adored friends Ariel Rosenberg and Geneva Jacuzzi with her debut album Good Evening, released in mid September. The sounds are rooted in sleazy, hazy ’80s disco nostalgia, with the vocals seasoning each track with low R&B whispers and loops.

New track ‘Another Horizon’ leads with a chirpy and grainy dancefloor backing, like a Debbie Deb B-side played underwater, before Gonzalez trips in with her eerie, delicate whispers. There’s an element of this track that points towards vintage pornography soundtracks, a nod to kitsch and cult LA, but with such a genuinely soothing touch that the seams are melted together. Gonzalez continues to sew this unusually effective balance perfectly, with hip-hop beats echoed over glitterball drama. ‘Another Horizon’ is the track Lykke Li wishes she could push her cliché’s aside for: an adorably tender song wearing a forgotten sequined catsuit, sweet and undeniably kinda sexy.
