Camera Obscura
‘The Blizzard’ [Jim Reeves cover]

Have yourself a heartbroken Christmas with Scottish gloom-pop merchants Camera Obscura on this cover of Jim Reeves’ ‘The Blizzard’, a windblown tale of woe of a man and his lame pony trying to make it back to his beloved Mary Ann. “Look into the Northern sun / If we don’t get home we’ll die,” sighs Tracyanne Campbell over a guitar and glockenspiel backing, and, not to put too fine a point on it, that’s exactly what happens. Seven miles becomes five then three, but the cold claims its victim 100 yards from home. When the bells ring out towards the end, it’s not with Christmas joy that they toll. So, now you know what you’re in for. Don’t say we didn’t warn you. ‘The Blizzard’ is released on a beautifully illustrated 7″ vinyl on Monday, backed with ‘Swans’.
