VIDEO | CocoRosie — ‘Lemonade’

CocoRosie
‘Lemonade’

Released at the beginning of the month, CocoRosie’s fourth album Grey Oceans found the Casady sisters beautifully refining their songcraft to create their most cohesive effort to date, an enveloping galaxy of cryptically personal songs wrapped up in all manner of twinkly, soothing sounds and much less of the more overtly attention-seeking quirks that made parts of 2007′s The Adventures Of Ghosthorse & Stillborn somewhat hard to love.

As much visual artists as they are musical – not that you’d know if from the terrible album cover – CocoRosie love to embody their creations and extrapolate themes through their outfits and in their videos, and this surreal and elaborately produced clip for lead single ‘Lemonade’ (out now digitally and on 7″ vinyl) is no exception.

Filmed in a beautifully appointed yet eerie stately home of some sort, Bianca and Sierra are pictured as old crones wandering the dark, empty halls and reflecting on the past. In one room they find themselves as children huddled round their Cherokee mother in a small sailboat parked in an indoor cornfield; in others they find their younger selves reflected in mirrors. It’s all very spooky, and weirdly touching. What else would you expect?
