It would be easy to condemn Parallels upon first listen as yet another retro-synth act recreating the aural landscapes of 1980s Depeche Mode, but there’s easily enough good stuff going on here to make this duo worth a mention. Hailing from Toronto, Parallels are singer Holly Dodson and former Crystal Castles drummer Cameron Findlay. ’Find The Fire’ is the lead track from their debut album Visionaries (available digitally only for the time being), and is subtle and sexy to the point where it could have been lifted from the classic Tangerine Dream soundtrack to brooding ’80s vampire horror flick ‘Near Dark’. Shadowy and mysterious, it retains enough sensuality and sense of fun that the lyric “We’ll be free inside the moonlight” actually works. Already appearing in hip magazines and on Kitsuné compilations, Parallels will soon be everywhere. But ultimately this bunch are aiming right for the dancefloor, and with ‘Find The Fire’ they hit it square on.
