News just in: the shortlist for the 2010 Barclaycard Mercury Prize was announced mere minutes ago from The Hospital Club in London. Among the nominees were Laura Marling, whose recent album I Speak Because I Can nets the young singer-songwriter her second Mercury Prize nod, The xx, and Corinne Bailey Rae.

So few women this year; to name just three who were sadly overlooked, we would have liked to have seen the likes of Nancy Elizabeth [review], Cate Le Bon [review] and Gemma Ray [review] in the list.

The list of nominees in full:

Corinne Bailey Rae – The Sea [review]
Biffy Clyro – Only Revolutions
Foals – Total Life Forever
I Am Kloot – Sky At Night
Kit Downes Trio – Golden
Laura Marling – I Speak Because I Can [review]
Mumford & Sons – Sigh No More
Dizzee Rascal – Tongue N’ Cheek
Villagers – Becoming A Jackal
Paul Weller – Wake Up The Nation
Wild Beasts – Two Dancers
The xx – xx [review]

The winning album will be announced at a ceremony to be held in September.
