For a few years now the Moulettes have been a key part of the exciting new music scene that stretches along England’s south coast from Southampton to Brighton, expanding from their original trio format to a five-piece band including cellist Hannah Miller, bassoonist Ruth Skipper, guitarist/drummer Ollie Austin, violinist Georgina Leach and percussionist Rob Acari. With their dues justly paid and celebrity fans including The Unthanks, Noisettes and Robert Plant, the time has come for the Moulettes to take their ambitious, genre-mashing songs to the next level with their self-titled debut out August 16 through Balling The Jack.
Intrigued? Then freebie track ‘Talisman’ is a great place to start. Easing from the gypsy-jazz groove of the intro into smooth, laidback, layered vocals, it lurches through twisty-turny passages – the grinding metallic guitar riff arrives unexpectedly, injecting some danger – and shifts in rhythm before coming to a beautiful halt.
