San Franciscan mischief makers Deerhoof have had a busy 2010 so far, not only self-recording (most of) their new two-disc album Deerhoof vs. Evil, to be released in January, but also curating this year’s Sonic City festival in Belgium and nailing some exciting on-stage collaborations with Yoko Ono Plastic Ono Band at their Bay Area gig back in February, and Xiu Xiu, with whom they covered the entirety of Joy Division’s Unknown Pleasures live at an Austrian festival in April. ‘The Merry Barracks’ finds Satomi Matsuzaki and co. stretching themselves yet again with true-to-form ragged precision. A two-handed trade off between crisp electronic production and reverb-cloaked rock riffs, it’s stuffed with unpredictable rhythmic changes and keyboard effects that leap and lurch towards the song’s abrupt ending in the way that only Deerhoof can make sense of.
