With their just-released second album Wild Go leaving reviewers fumbling for adjectives to frame its sublimeness, Minneapolis sextet Dark Dark Dark are riding high on a wave of justly earned acclaim. In frontwoman Nona Marie Invie they have a stunning vocal instrument that’s haunted and rich and capable of more than simply matching the music, a voice that’s magically transformative in the same way as Beach House’s Victoria Legrand can elevate snatches of a mundane repetitive lyric to heartstopping levels of beauty. The album version of ‘Daydreaming’ is a perfect example of this skill; “Oh the unspeakable things,” cries Invie over and over again as an expertly restrained backdrop of reverbed guitar, sparse drums, distorted banjo and accordion swells beneath her.
This freebie remix makes a passing nod to all that subtle stuff but scuffs it up with plenty of imagination, looping Invie’s bird calls and scattered runs of lyrics over a soft, skittering beat and judicious use of an atmospheric panning effect. Simply gorgeous.
