Viv Albertine
‘Home Sweet Home (…At Christmas)’

It’s a Christmas single, for sure, but if you’re expecting festive schmaltz from legendary Slits guitarist Viv Albertine you’ll be sorely disappointed. ‘Home Sweet Home (…At Christmas)’ is a “sinister seasonal adaptation” of her forthcoming single ‘Confessions Of A MILF’ and delves into the dark side of Yuletide celebrations, that time of year where expectations are high and to-do lists (shopping, presents, cooking Christmas dinner for an extended family, entertaining in-laws, keeping children occupied) are long.

Fans might like to know that this track was mixed by Dennis Bovell, the fella who mixed The Slits’ enduring masterpiece Cut. And while there’s a constant jingle of sleigh bells, the sing-song optimism soon turns into a nasty, nagging dialogue of insults and the sparkly cheer sours into dizzy, miserable panic as the pressure builds. Not the most jovial number but a cathartic listen for anyone who knows what it’s like to burn the Christmas dinner and suffer the awkward undercurrents of dinner table politics while wearing silly hats.
