SHE SAID, SHE SAID | Janelle Monáe

“Just love and embrace the person that they are; don’t allow anyone to dim their light. Part of what my music represents is to stand up and be the voice of those who feel like they are not heard and want to be treated with respect regardless of race, colour, orientation – android, cyborg, whatever”

Janelle Monáe speaks out with some encouraging words for female/lesbian students in the US who are barred from their proms and/or senior photos because they want to break with gender traditions and wear something similar to the shirts and ties that she herself dons. As well as discussing her gloriously “androidgynous” wardrobe, Monáe told Mother Jones magazine about her political vision (“I want to create a purple state, not cater to just a red one or a blue one – mix those colours together”), her dislike of the term ‘science fiction’ and her favourite Christmas soundtracks.

Just when we thought we couldn’t love her any more than we did after witnessing her year-crowning show at Shepherd’s Bush Empire this past weekend. Were you there? Holla at us in the comments section below if you were. Let’s relive it together.
