Neko Case raffling off her muscle car for charity

January 18, 2011 by Odhran ODonoghue in Blog

New Pornographers vocalist and solo artist extraordinaire, Neko Case is not someone who does things by half. So, when she lends her support to a charity, she does it on a grand scale.

In what has been termed ‘The Mercury Cougar-Rama Muscle Car-‘Splosion’, Case is raffling off her beloved 1967 Mercury Cougar, famously featured on the fantastic cover of her equally fantastic 2009 album Middle Cyclone, for the benefit of the 826 National. This brilliant charity is a network of nine non-profit organisations dedicated to helping students between the ages of six and eighteen with expository and creative writing.

According to the 826 National’s website, the car “comes packed with Rand McNally guides, piles of road trip tunes, gift certificates to Chipotle, a year’s supply of Tazo Tea, and other goodies.”

Lots of other prizes are also up for grabs, including a drum head signed by The New Pornographers and Neko Case’s limited-edition 1966 Gretsch Silver Duke guitar. Tickets are priced at $45 dollars, but unfortunately can only be purchased in the United States. Unfair.

The raffle begins on February 14 and runs ’til the end of that week, when the winner will be drawn. See Neko and the car in action in this promo clip.
