SHE SAID, SHE SAID | Sinéad O’Connor

February 1, 2011 by Alan Pedder in Blog

“A lot of people have suicidal thoughts and you should never be ashamed to say that is how you are feeling [...] By saying you feel the way you do it’s a way of getting rid of the feelings. When I posted on Twitter it was like emotional diarrhoea; I was thinking out loud, and it was a great blessing that I could express those thoughts.”

Sinéad O’Connor has opened up to the Irish Mail about her struggles to cope with bipolar disorder and being a mother that led her to vent on Twitter last week about thoughts of suicide, which she insists she would never have acted upon. Eleven years ago, O’Connor attempted suicide by drug overdose when she feared that one of her children would be taken away from her – an act she describes as “so selfish”.

“For me, suicide is one of the most selfish acts a person can do. You may as well murder your whole family,” she told reporter Niamh Walsh. Sinéad has since deleted her Twitter account, for the time being.
