If her third album, 2009′s To Be Still, showcased more of a band sound for Alela Diane, her new album takes that one or two steps further with a loose but sturdy feel. What’s perhaps most surprising about ‘To Begin’, the first track to emerge from Alela Diane & Wild Divine ahead of its April 4 release, is how poppy it sounds with its jaunty keyboard riffs and flourishes. That, and Alela’s stretching for new vocal heights. Producer Scott Litt, who helmed all of REMs classic ’90s albums, smooths it all together beautifully.
