A busy week for Kate Bush fans

April 5, 2011 by Odhran ODonoghue in Blog

It’s turning out to be a busy week in Kate Bush land. Not only has the elusive singer revealed the tracklist for her upcoming release Director’s Cut, which see her revisit songs from previous albums The Sensual World and The Red Shoes, she’s also revealed that she’s been hard at work on a short film to accompany the release of new-old single ‘Deeper Understanding’, which premiered in full on BBC Radio 2 on Monday (listen in full below). Directed by Bush herself, the clip stars Robbie Coltrane, Frances Barker and Noel Fielding, as well as her son Bertie, who plays the role of a computer programme. Incidentally, it is Bertie that sings the vocoder-treated parts on ‘Deeper Understanding’.

Director’s Cut arrives in shops on May 16, and is the first release on Bush’s own Fish People imprint after she recovered the original albums from longtime label EMI in January this year. The album features newly recorded vocals and drums for every track, while three songs – including the iconic ‘This Woman’s Work’ – have been completely re-recorded. All tracks retain their original titles, with the exception of ‘The Sensual World’, which has been renamed ‘Flower Of The Mountain’ – and with good reason, as Bush explains:

“Originally when I wrote the song ‘The Sensual World’ I had used text from the end of ‘Ulysses’ by James Joyce, put to a piece of music I had written. When I asked for permission to use the text I was refused, which was disappointing. I then wrote my own lyrics for the song although I felt that the original idea had been more interesting. Well, I’m not James Joyce am I? When I came to work on this project I thought I would ask for permission again and this time they said yes. It is now re-titled ‘Flower Of the Mountain’ and I am delighted that I have had the chance to fulfill the original concept.”

Speaking of the release as a whole, Kate added: “For some time I have felt that I wanted to revisit tracks from these two albums and that they could benefit from having new life breathed into them. Lots of work had gone into the two original albums and now these songs have another layer of work woven into their fabric. I think of this as a new album.”
