Dolly Parton and Queen Latifah aren’t the most obvious pairing, but come January 2012 they’ll be lighting up the silver screen together as co-stars in the gospel-themed movie, ‘Joyful Noise’. Written and directed by Todd Graff (2003′s ‘Camp’), the film sees Parton team up with Latifah to mentor a smalltown choir when their leader – Parton’s on-screen husband, played by Kris Kristofferson – dies. As with all such movies, there’s a national competition and a whole lot of odds stacked against them. Wonder how it ends…
Speaking to Billboard.com, Dolly also shed some more light on her 41st studio album, Better Day, out August 29. “Every project calls for something different, and on this [one] I wanted a lot of colours,” she explained. “I wanted to do something uplifting so even in the losing songs, I’m saying you’re going to pick up the pieces.”
“It seemed that with everything being so doomsday-terrorists and bad weather and unemployment, we need a little sunshine. I know I can sing a good sad song, but people hate to hear me sing them. I wanted to do something people would want to hear.”
