free music monday: lady lazarus

What is it about Daniel Johnston’s music that lends itself to brilliant covers? In recent years Beach House’s dreamy version of ‘Some Things Last A Long Time’ and Karen O’s gorgeous rendition of ‘Worried Shoes’ spring to mind as being particularly fetching, and now California’s Melissa Ann Sweat (aka Lady Lazarus) can join their esteemed ranks. Laden with reverb – though nowhere near as harshly recorded as her 2009 Home Recordings EP – the musician half sings, half speaks the moving lyrics of ‘Story Of An Artist’, accompanied only by a simple piano melody and the warm hiss of the tape deck. Stunning.
