Folk legend Woody Guthrie would have celebrated his 100th birthday in July 2012, so plans are afoot to commemorate the hugely influential musician with a series of releases. The first, arriving September 26, is Note Of Hope: A Celebration Of Woody Guthrie, which features all-new music from the likes of Ani DiFranco, Nellie McKay and Madeleine Peyroux adapted from unpublished and ‘lost’ lyrics by the great man himself. Another compilation made in a similar fashion is in the works for January 2012, while the Natalie Merchant-featuring Billy Bragg and Wilco collaborations Mermaid Avenue (1998) and Mermaid Avenue Vol. 2 (2000), both based on Guthrie lyrics, will be reissued as a fancy boxset with potential for some unreleased material to be included.
The Note Of Hope tracklist runs as follows:
Van Dyke Parks, ‘The Note Of Hope’
Madeleine Peyroux, ‘Wild Card In The Hole’
Tom Morello, ‘Ease My Revolutionary Mind’
Lou Reed, ‘The Debt I Owe’
Michael Franti, ‘Union Love Juice’
Kurt Elling, ‘Peace Pin Boogie’
Ani DiFranco, ‘Voice’
Studs Terkel, ‘I Heard A Man Talking’
Nellie McKay, ‘Old Folks’
Chris Whitley, ‘On The High Lonesome’
Pete Seeger & Tony Trischka, ‘There’s A Feeling In Music’
