Jenn Mierau is a classically trained pianist, but you wouldn’t necessarily know it from listening to her debut album, Hush, out September 13. Writing, recording and producing the whole thing herself, the Winnipeg native has delivered an album of artfully arranged, layered electronica and sweet but shadowy vocals. It might feel a touch derivative on first listen, but repeat hearings allow you to pick out the nuances that Mierau makes her own. The title track is a good example of this, building in instrumentation from a relatively plain beginning to a more exhilarating mesh of drum loops, keys and basslines. Check out her striking version of The Cure’s oft-covered ‘Lovesong’ too. The phrasing and emotion of the vocal at times reminds of Portishead’s Beth Gibbons.
