VIDEO | Säkert! — ‘Can I’

August 31, 2011 by Alan Pedder in Blog

Säkert!
‘Can I’

Back in January we got very excited about the prospect of new English-language material from Hello Saferide mastermind Annika Norlin, who spent most of 2010 singing in her native Swedish with other band Säkert!. More than just another Hello Saferide album (not that we would complain!), the amusingly titled På Engelska (‘in English’) features translated versions of nine tracks from last year’s Säkert! album Facit and two from their 2007 self-titled debut. By translating the songs almost word for word, Norlin found that she was singing almost in “a third language” (can we call it Swenglish? I think we can), “English words used in a Swedish way”. The result is, as expected, wonderfully charming.

The video for lead single ‘Can I’ is based around the concept of daring, and features photos (both from fans and some specially photographed by Julia Nygren) of people holding up signs declaring a variety of brave things they’ve done. This is the heartwarming, brilliant result. Warning: you may cry.
