Becky Becky is a quite unexpected diversion for Gemma Williams, who’s better known as disarmingly delicate folkie Woodpecker Wooliams. In this new guise, a collaboration with former Fence Collective member Meat Peter, she’s been given a synth-pop makeover described as “Leonard Cohen by way of The Knife”. A song about seeking self-destruction through illicit drugs and sex, ‘The Harder Stuff’ presents Williams in a completely different light. It’s available now via iTunes and Bandcamp with a host of remixes and the promise of more music to follow later this year.
We haven’t heard the last of Woodpecker Wooliams though. Gemma tells us that she’s about to go into the studio to record a new album for release next year on Robot Elephant Records. She’s also supporting Damon & Naomi in London on December 11 as part of the Viola Nights series, which kicks off tonight at the Whirled Art Cinema with Puzzle Muteson and Nancy Elizabeth.
