[Don Giovanni; April 3]
New Jersey trio Screaming Females enlisted legendary recording engineer Steve Albini for this follow-up to 2010′s Castle Talk, which promises to capture the full-throttle rock’n'roll energy of Marissa Paternoster and co. across a generous fourteen tracks. That said, when speaking to The Washington Post back in October, Paternoster gave a different, assuredly tongue-in-cheek version of what fans can expect to hear on Ugly, saying: “It’s chillwave. It’s witch house…We don’t care! We’re bringing it back! It’s post-witch-house! Dubstep, that’s in there, too…We just want to write some good songs. For riding your bike. For walking your dog. For driving your cool car. For driving your Grandma around to the supermarket. ‘Hey Grandma, listen to this. This rocks!’.”
More recently, Paternoster had this to say about working with Albini: “I’ve read a few interviews with other bands that have recorded with Steve Albini, and it seems like most music journalists are only interested in discussing Steve’s infamous temper and remarkable career. We really enjoyed working with Steve, he did an absolutely amazing job and we enjoyed his company immensely, but this record is ours. I’m not particularly interested in discussing the details of what went on during our time at Electrical Audio, and I’m sure that Steve Albini wouldn’t be interested in it either.”
Lead single ‘It All Means Nothing’ gets an official 7″ release on February 11, backed with a live version of ‘A New Kid’ from a session recorded at independent radio station WFMU. Physical copies will be available for purchase exclusively from the band during a run of record store shows in Brooklyn, though we’re hoping a few of them will find their way online for fans this side of the Atlantic.
