Apparently this cover of Janelle Monáe’s ’Tightrope’ by Franco–Finn duo The Dø has been floating around since before Christmas, but for some unknown reason it’s only just come to the attention to the world at large. And it’s a darn good thing that it did, for their rendition is very, very good indeed. Whereas Monáe’s original jives with effortless funk and palpable soul, Olivia Merilahti and Dan Levy refract the track out into nine glorious minutes of grungy blues, building to a chaotic and impassioned crescendo. Makes for a nice change from the standard prosaic acoustic covers, right?
The Dø played a cracking gig at Bush Hall last night in support of their 2011 album Both Ways Open Jaws, but fret not if you missed it for the band return to London on April 11 for a headline show at The Garage.
