Sweden’s Frida Hyvönen has been more or less flying under the radar since the release of her 2008 album Silence Is Wild. Well, not outside of her native country at least; she’s since collaborated with photographer Elin Bergh on a CD/book project about Thai women who moved to the north of Sweden in the name of romance, and set a piece by Swedish poet Sonja Åkesson to music for a 2011 compilation.
Now she’s back on a grander scale with a new single, the improbably but wonderfully disco-tinged ‘Terribly Dark’ (out now), and a new album To The Soul (out in Sweden on April 18 through RMV Grammofon). Part of the reason she’s been so quiet is that she spent a long time travelling through Bali, India and Zimbabwe, before returning to her adopted home of Paris and to Västerbotten in northern Sweden to write new songs. The recording of To The Soul took place during the summer and autumn of 2011, with Jari Haapalainen (Camera Obscura, The Concretes) returning on production for the third time.
Watch the rather sinister black-and-white video of ‘Terribly Dark’ below. Sadly, it doesn’t seem to be available in the UK iTunes store yet. Get on that, Apple.
