Sarah Joyce has been pretty quiet since her acclaimed Rumer debut Seasons Of My Soul [review] dropped in 2010, before going on to sell over a million copies. The singer earned two Brits nominations for that record, and a MOJO Award for Breakthrough Act, so we’re curious to see how this follow-up will fare. Boys Don’t Cry finds the mellow-voiced singer covering a collection of lesser-known songs from the 1970s, calling on an all-male cast of singers from a bold range of genres. Joyce says of the album, which she began recording while still unsigned: “This project is about passion, and paying respect to other people’s work. I went on a journey and this music tells that story.”
Those other people include the likes of Todd Rundgren, Townes Van Zandt, Leon Russell, Isaac Hayes and Bob Marley, and the result is said to be a “dark, diverse” set of songs with many having personal echoes for Joyce. Stream her cover of Clifford T Ward’s ‘Home Thoughts From Abroad’ below.
